History of the Congregation of the Carmelite Religious (CCR)

The Congregation of the Carmelite Religious was founded by Mother Mary Veronica of the Passion on July 1868 in Bayonne, France. During those days, education especially for girls was the crying need of the people of India. Sensing this need, Mother Mary Veronica was invited by the Carmelite Father Marie Ephrem Garrelon OCD to help with the Indian mission. Answering to this call she worked in India, concentrating on the education of girls and the empowerment of women and the less privileged. In 1880, with the consent of her Foundress Mother Mary Veronica of the Passion, Mother Mary Elias of Jesus the Co - Foundress founded Holy Angel’s Convent at Trivandrum, Kerala, India. From here the Congregation has spread to most of the states in India and abroad. Following the footsteps of Our Lord and Master, Jesus Christ and teachings and blessings of our Foundress and Co - Foundress we, her daughters seek to en-kindle the fire of Divine Love in the hearts of all God’s children. Through education and other works of mercy we seek to promote the kingdom values of Justice, Fellowship Freedom and Equality among our students and thereby bringing harmony in society.
